Why?

Let's face it: Doing business in a successful way is in general not an easy thing, but doing it outside of our homecountry and our own cultural background is even harder.

Yet working in an international melting pot like Dubai with 90% foreigners coming from all different parts of the world, and where we often have our regional HQ overseeing many countries (e.g. GCC, ME, MENA, MEA, META or even including South & Central Asia), that is the hardest task and it requires Managers and Teams who are fully on that task and who have the skills and mindset to succeed - often against a tough competition.

To help you with all this, I have created a few special programs which I explain in more detail below.

Why only for Chinese companies?

Very good question! Since my time in China from 2010 to 2013 I have a special connection with the country and the people. It is my personal goal and mission to help Chinese companies and Chinese people to improve their performance and to improve their skills to better connect with the international community (professionally and privately).

I have realized that many Chinese companies operating here in the Middle East do have a few core challenges, so I created my programs to help them improve and overcome those challenges. The main hurdle to overcome for most of them is clearly the language barrier for their Chinese expat staff.

Why is it so important for Chinese Expats to improve their Business English?

The short answer is: English is the language of international business, so no matter where we are from and what our position in a company is, we need to be able to speak it.

The longer answer: Yes, English is the language of business in an international environment, but what exactly are the benefits for Chinese companies to increase the English level of its Chinese expats - and how can this be achieved?

Actually, the benefits are manifold, here are just a few:

  1. Improved communication: By having employees who are proficient in English, you can more effectively communicate with customers, partners, and suppliers based in English-speaking countries. This can lead to increased sales and more opportunities for growth and expansion. It is not good enough to have interpreters sitting next to the sales or operations teams.

  2. Enhanced competitiveness: In today's global economy, businesses that can communicate effectively in English have a distinct advantage over those that cannot. By investing in English language training for your employees, you can improve your organization's competitiveness and better position yourself to succeed in the global marketplace.

  3. Improved cultural understanding: Reality is that Chinese culture and behavioral norms can be very different from those in other parts of the world. Understanding the cultural norms and customs of English-speaking countries can help you avoid miscommunications and build stronger, more lasting relationships with your business partners.

  4. Increased efficiency within your teams: Clear communication can increase efficiency and productivity in the office, especially when you have mixed teams (Chinese people and foreigners). It can also avoid misunderstandings and mistakes that can lead to wasted time and resources.

  5. Access to a wider pool of talent: By being able to communicate effectively in English, your organization will be better equipped to attract and hire top talent from around the world. This can help you build a more diverse, dynamic, and innovative team. If your office language (meetings, mails, debates) is not English, then you will not be able to attract foreign talent.

  6. Better career perspective: Chinese Expats who have improved their English during their stay in Dubai will also have a better career outlook when they return to China or move on to their next destination.

All in all, investing in English language training for your employees can provide a wealth of benefits for your Chinese business. It will be a relatively small investment and the returns will be well worth it. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and development within your organization, you can also help ensure that your employees have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in today's fast-paced, global economy.

What other challenges do Chinese companies have here in Dubai?

As mentioned, doing business in such a cultural melting pot as it is Dubai, and with a set up where many companies have their regional HQ in Dubai, is definitely not an easy task - not just for Chinese companies but for all multinational companies. During my years in Corporate as Department Head / Regional Director and Continuous Improvement Expert, I was able to witness that we all face similar problems, but it might be even more difficult for Chinese companies.

Besides the language barrier, as Managers we also have to deal with other challenges, such as the culture barrier, or how to deeply connect with customers, with different management styles and company cultures, with team motivation & mindset, with workload management and efficiency, with staff turnover and quickly bringing new joiners up to speed. It is about creating organizations and teams which constantly try to improve and strive for better results, not just by working harder and longer, but by working smarter and finding creative solutions.

So what are you doing about it?

As CEOs and Chinese Expat Managers,

  • you can either choose to somehow do your job, struggle, work longer hours, survive 3-4 years, and then go back to China.

  • or you can choose to tackle these challenges heads on and put your organization on a path to faster learning, improved efficiency, higher growth - and to better attract talent.

If you choose this path, then I am happy to support you with this!
